 Art Class

WELCOME TO MR. FELICIANO'S ART CLASS

Art should be about creativity and expression.  Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and therefore, there is no such thing as bad art.  The one thing I have stressed and will continue to stress is that there is no such thing as "I can't do it".  Art is subjective.  You can't make mistakes.  In this class, I want the students to have fun and expand their creativity without fear of if their artwork looks "good".  Every person is an artist in their own way.  In this class, I hope to meet each and every one of them and create awesome artwork together.

HOW AM I GRADED IN ART CLASS?

You will receive one grade for art at the end of each trimester.  The grade will be either:
      U (Unsatisfactory), I (Incomplete), S (Satisfactory) or O (Outstanding)

Graded Supply Picture

This grade will be based on your ability to receive credit, each class, in my four areas of grade consideration.  Each class, a student will receive a grade of U, S, or I.  The grade will be based on the following:

  • U: receives credit in none of the 4 areas of grade consideration for that particular class
  • I: receives credit in 1 or 2 of the 4 areas of grade consideration for that particular class
  • S: receives credit in 3 or 4 of the 4 areas of grade consideration for that particular class

An O will be reserved for limited times when a student receives credit in all four areas of consideration and also creates a piece that goes above and beyond the typical requirements and expectations of the assignment.  The letters you receive each week will then be averaged together at the end to determine an overall letter grade for the trimester.

What are 4 Areas of Grade Consideration?

1. PREPARATION

Students need to be prepared for class.  They should always have a pencil, crayons, markers, scissors, a glue stick and a glue bottle.  Preparation does not pertain to the occasional times when a student may ask to borrow an item like a specific color they want to use and don’t own. If there is a special supply needed for a particular art class, students and parents will be made aware with sufficient time to acquire the supply.  Please note though that this is not something I will ask of often.

2. EFFORT

Art is subjective and therefore, I am unable to grade someone on “how good of an artist he/she is” or “how good the artwork looks”.  Everyone is an artist and creates art in a different way.  I can’t grade on ability but I can grade on effort.  Effort will be defined as how much the student tries to complete the task and how hard the student works during class.  Effort will not be based on artistic ability.

3. BEHAVIOR

Discussion is expected and welcomed in art class; however, it needs to be appropriate and supportive.  The students need to adhere to the basic classroom rules:

- Stay in your seat

- Raise your hand

- Keep conversation low in volume, respectful and to a minimum

- Listen to the teacher

- Make sure any comments made towards our peers’ artwork are positive and respectful.

4. COMPLETION OF TASK

At the end of the class, what has the student done?  The artwork should be finished and be reflective of the student’s hard work.  If the assignment is not completely finished by the end of class, there should at least be evidence of effort and reason for the task to require more time.  Redoing the assignment three or more times within the same period will not be a sufficient reason for incomplete work.
